New Everything

A little over 2 weeks ago Travis and I embarked on a new adventure literally and figuratively. We had packed up all of our belongings into 2 moving pods, got into our car and started our long drive west. I had hoped to share many pictures from our 3 day drive from Madison, WI to Oakland CA, but alas there was a minor phone mishap (lets just say someone left it on the roof of the car and it went flying off at 30 miles an hour) luckily the phone was retrieved but I couldn't use it until it was repaired so the trip went undocumented. Some of it was flat and boring, I'm thinking of you Oklahoma and Texas, while other parts of the journey were beyond spectacular, like the sunset while driving through New Mexico. And then we finally arrived in the Bay area, without any of our furniture and only a couple days until I started my new job at Williams-Sonoma, we attacked the city with gusto. Eating and exploring our way around our new neighborhood, which led to mishap #2, waking up with food poisoning on my first day of work! Other then a few minor incidents we have made a pretty smooth transition into our new home and life.

In the next few weeks I will be trying to get back to normal posting, it might be more sporadic though since I am still getting my feet under me. I will also be trying to intersperse posts here and there about my new hometown, which I'm absolutely in love with! Along with the ups and downs of relocating, So look forward to those.

My Absence

Some of you may have noticed my lack of posting for the last couple of weeks and while I probably won't get back to normal posting for another week or so. I wanted to explain my absence.

The last couple weeks have been a whirlwind of change, mostly very positive and good change (which I will explain later) But there was one change in my life that has been more difficult, and that was the passing of my grandfather. To say he was an extraordinary man would be an understatement. He had a life so full of creativity, ingenuity, adventure and curiosity it would put some of the greatest minds in history to shame (in my humble opinion). A scientist and inventor who started his own business while raising a family and traveling to far off places, such as Ethiopia, Greece or just camping in the boundary waters. He never sat still, or stopped learning and always had some new anecdote or invention to discuss with anybody who would listen. I'm continually impressed by him and hope the stories of my life will someday equal his. He will be missed.

I also just wanted to mention quickly the positive changes that have been happening in my life. I got a new job in San Francisco and am moving next week. I will of course be posting more about this major upheaval, which I'm beyond excited about in upcoming weeks, but that is one of the reasons why I have been so busy, too busy to post.

I very rarely feel a connection, or loyalty to a brand, as hard as advertisers work to get customers to only buy their product, there really is only one that I have been dedicated too, which of course is apple. And a big reason for this is Steve Jobs. When I was in graphic design school I bought my first apple 13" macbook, it was my prize possession, so small and beautiful. I would spend hours on that tiny little screen kerning type and laying out images, and in the process fell in love with design. There were, of course, many things that contributed to my love of design but Apple provided one of my most important tools and for that I am grateful. Steve Jobs will be sorely missed and not just because of the products he brought to us, but because of his vision, his creativity and his love of turtlenecks! R.I.P. Steve!

Anniversary & Style Inspiration

So believe it or not yesterday was my blogs 1 year anniversary, well technically I started it before that, but it was a year ago that I decided to really commit to it and have pretty successfully posted every weekday since (except for holidays). It's a little bit ironic that I'm celebrating this anniversary now because this month I've really been struggling with staying inspired and not getting bogged down with other projects. So I wanted to introduce a new style inspiration segment that, to me has a little bit of a more personal spin, and maybe that will help me get reinvigorated.

Here's the thing, I tend to get really frustrated with the way the fashion industry treats anyone above a size 4. If your not petite or lanky you get very few style icons to look up to, or fashion spreads to get inspired by. Even street style, which is supposed to be capturing "real" women tends to focus on the tiny or now more then ever, models (who happen to be standing on the street). And every fashion week there seems to be the same dialogue about size in the fashion industry, but nothing ever changes. So for my own piece of mind, as someone who does appreciate fashion, but isn't a size 4, and would like to see what it looks like on someone other then a 14 year old model, I've decided to introduce a new segment featuring my fashion and style inspirations for curvier girls. Today it's all about the incomparable Beth Ditto of The Gossip. This lady seriously rocks my world, I could listen to her voice all day. But I also love that she's beyond daring with her fashion choices, from a gold lame onesie to pearls, which I admire.

Reader Request: How To Make Your Apartment Cozier

Recently I got a blog post request from my dearest and funniest of friends, Madeleine. She is struggling to make her apartment cozy and homey even after being in it for close to a year now. So she wanted some tips. Below are my tops 5 affordable ways to make your apartment more cozy, along with some visual inspiration.
1. Hang pictures & artwork: This is key, and can be quite affordable if you frame the pieces yourself. If you don't feel up to the challenge of cutting your own mat board I recommend going to a craft store and buying the pre-cut options and assembling yourself.

2. Install Curtains: Curtains can really warm up a space and provide a nice soft texture if your space is a little more industrial.

3. Secondary lighting: Many small tabletop or floor lamps can really transform a space and make it infinitely more cozy. They can also highlight certain areas or artwork that might have been lost in the shadows.

4. Potted plants or flowers: Always bring a little life into your space, I also strongly suggest you splurge every once in a while and buy a gorgeous bouquet for your apartment.

5. Throw pillows: Another way to add texture, color, and warmth into a room.

Blue Sofas

Blue couches have been catching my eye as of late, I don't know if it's the influence of the always stylish Emily Henderson (who seems to be keen on blue as well) or if blue is just a nice color to break out of theI neutral colored sofa box, without going crazy. Recipe Review: Bran Muffins

The last couple of weeks I was getting in the really bad habit of buying myself a coffee and muffin for breakfast every morning before work. So this last weekend I decided instead of being lazy and paying for a 3 dollar muffin every morning I should be making my own. And my newest cookbook, Super Natural Every Day by 101 Cookbooks blogger Heidi Swanson had the perfect bran muffin recipe for me to try. See recipe below.

Bran Muffin Recipe

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1 cup buttermilk or plain yogurt (I used goats milk yogurt)

1/2 Barely melted unsalted butter

1/4 cup maple syrup (I used 1/2 cup and excluded the sugar mentioned below)

1/2 cup unprocessed wheat bran or oat bran

1 1/2 cups plain, unsweetened bran cereal

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour

1/4 cup natural cane sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon aluminum-free baking powder

1 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt

Preheat the oven to 400°F with a rack in the middle of the oven. Generously butter a standard 12-cup muffin pan.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and maple syrup. Sprinkle the bran and the cereal across the top, stir, and allow the mixture to sit for 5 minutes.

In the meantime, in a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Sprinkle the dry ingredients over the top of the wet and stir until just combined. Immediately fill each muffin cup three-quarters full.

Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until the edges of the muffins begin to brown and the tops have set. Let cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then turn the muffins out of the pan to cool completely on a wire rack.

My Nuptials: The Cake

This might sound blasphemous but... I don't really care too much about the cake. I'm not a huge sweets person and when I was looking at what it cost, it just seemed ridiculous to me, but Travis on the other hand is a serious chocoholic. So we compromised and as crazy as it might sound Travis is making the cake for our wedding! He has some baking experience and he promises he'll make plenty of test runs over the next year, which means anybody who wants to help us eat the mountains of cake we see in our future you are more then welcome to come over and indulge. In the meantime I've been trying to find inspiration for him online because although I might not care what it tastes like, I do care what it looks like. Below are a few of my favorite finds.
